7 Tips for Interviews

1. Research the Organization or Person

Know the company’s mission, values, recent news, and key players. For personal interviews (e.g., college or networking), research the interviewer’s background if possible. Tailoring your responses shows preparation and genuine interest.

2. Practice Your Responses, But Don't Memorize

Prepare answers for common questions like “Tell me about yourself” or “What are your strengths and weaknesses, ” but don’t memorize them word-for-word. Aim to sound natural, not rehearsed.

3. Prepare Questions to Ask the Interviewer

Asking thoughtful questions about the role, company, or organization demonstrates your interest and engagement. Avoid generic questions-make them specific and insightful.

4. Arrive Early and Be Polite to Everyone

Arriving 10-15 minutes early gives you time to compose yourself. Treat everyone you encounter receptionists, assistants, or other staff with respect, as they may have input on the hiring decision.

5. Focus on Your Body Language

Sit up straight, maintain good eye contact, and avoid fidgeting. A firm handshake (if appropriate) and a confident smile can help set a positive tone.

6. Use the STAR Method for Behavioral Questions

When asked to describe a past experience, structure your answer using STAR:
Situation: Set the context.
Task: Explain your responsibility.
Action : Describe what you did.
Result: Share the outcome.

7. Follow Up with a Thank-You Note

Send a personalized thank-you email or letter within 24 hours. Reference specific points from the conversation to reinforce your interest and show attention to detail. It’s not advisable to send a thank-you letter that you could have written even before having the interview.
