The UC Transfer Path: A Second Chance at Their Dream UC
Did your high school senior not get into their desired UC? While disappointing, this isn’t the end of the road—many students still have a chance to attend their dream UC through the UC transfer path. With the right planning, your student can too.
How UC Transfers Work
UC welcomes thousands of transfer students each year. Here’s what to know:
-
Transfers can happen in as little as one year. Students typically need 60 semester (90 quarter) units of UC-transferable coursework, but AP credits or high school college courses can shorten this timeline.
-
Students must complete a 7-course pattern for eligibility, including two English composition courses, one math course, and four additional courses in at least two disciplines (humanities, social sciences, or sciences).
-
Major-specific coursework is typically required. Different UC campuses and majors have unique prerequisite courses that must be completed before transferring.
-
Students must again answer 4 Personal Insight Questions (PIQs). One PIQ is required for all transfer applicants, focused on their chosen major, and students must choose three additional questions from the remaining seven options.
The Importance of Early Planning
To maximize transfer success, students should start planning as soon as possible:
-
Choose a major early – Many UC programs require specific courses for transfer admission.
-
Complete English & Math first – UC recommends students prioritize these courses, as they can impact admission chances.
-
Use UC transfer resources – Tools like ASSIST.org can help families understand campus-specific transfer requirements.
